The sea and the coast are very fitting themes for our “Kiwi kids” who grow up surrounded by them. Add some mystery, music and materials and you arrive at some very creative sculptures!
On arriving at the Auckland Art Gallery our Year 1 and 2 students received a ‘mystery kit’ and led themselves on a journey to create some unique artwork. Four different felt tip pens, four crayons and four paint sticks per child and discussions with an abstract artist got them thinking outside the square!
Exploring the gallery, they saw how beached whale bones were not just static but were turned into art through sculpture too. The teachers and gallery staff were impressed by the ideas and questions our students brought to the table.
