Ficino Preschool is now thriving following the challenging years of Covid and its aftermath. It is completely full and has a substantial waiting list. We are now starting to give our attention to the pathway from Ficino Preschool to the School and, as part of this, students from across different years groups are getting the opportunity to spend time with our preschool children. This has benefits for both age groups: the little ones love the attention from the older children and look up to them with awe and admiration, and the school children have the opportunity to be of service in a delightful way that comes very naturally to them. As you know as parents, when a young child is looking up to you, there is no option but to respond. They have a habit of bringing us out of ourselves.
This week, the activities that the preschool and school children have been working on together are inspired by the festival of Matariki or Māori New Year. This is a time of reflection, renewal, and unity and is marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster (also known as Pleiades).
At the heart of Matariki is the importance of togetherness. It’s a time to gather with loved ones; share stories; remember those who are no longer here; and look to the year ahead. It’s also a perfect opportunity to include children because, according to Māori tradition, Matariki reminds us that our futures are shared and that each person, from the youngest to the eldest, has a place in our collective journey. By celebrating Matariki with children, we foster a sense of community and continuity that honours the past and inspires hope for what lies ahead.
