At Ficino school we regularly practice emergency drills. This helps the children learn how to respond quickly and appropriately to different emergency scenarios. Next week will be the Shake Out drill. When an earthquake happens we want the children to DROP, COVER, and HOLD. When outside, Civil Defence recommends that we move away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power lines, then Drop, Cover, and Hold until the shaking stops.
Please talk to your children about what to do in an emergency whilst at home – remember one conversation could save a life. Check out the Fire and Emergency advise to get your Fire Plan organised.
Fire Emergency New Zealand advises that there are three things you can do to get out quickly and safely if a fire occurs in your home.
- Install working smoke alarms in lounges and family living areas, halls, bedrooms, and sleep-outs to alert you to the fire. If you are asleep, you cannot smell smoke.
- Have an escape plan so that every family or whānau member knows two ways to get out of every room and knows where to go to the safe meeting place outside.
- Practise getting out of every room FAST when the smoke alarm goes off or if someone shouts ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’
Have a safe and happy weekend.
