School Newsletter Week 3, Term 2, 2015

Building resilience is an important part of childhood, in order to be able to stand on our own feet later in life. There is a story about a donkey that fell into an old well and couldn’t get out. When the farmer arrived on the scene he decided there was nothing he could do. He really had no need for either the donkey or the well; so he decided to fill it in. His neighbour came to help and they began shovelling dirt on top of the poor donkey. As he found himself being covered, a thought occurred to the donkey – each time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, he shook it off and stepped up, and to the farmer and his neighbour’s amazement, soon the donkey simply walked out of the well and trotted away. The moral of the story is of course that disadvantages can be turned into opportunities and if we can learn to shake things off and step up, none of life’s challenges need be insurmountable.

I first heard this story on former Head Boy, Tristan Pang’s new radio programme called “Youth Voices”. While waiting to start university in July Tristan has started his own radio show! It is broadcast on Planet FM 104.6 at 5.20pm on a Saturday evening. In it he provides some inspirational stories, quotes, and even jokes, but all are uplifting and some of your children might enjoy hearing Tristan on air. Here is the link to the archives and in the most recent one there is an interview about Ficino School.
