School Newsletter Week 1, Term 3, 2015

The students have enjoyed a full first week back at school. Our assembly this morning gave a broad picture of all the many facets of school life. There was mention of the Australian Mathematics Competition which was sat yesterday by students from Year 4 to Year 8; with a few Year 3’s as well. We congratulated our students from Years 3 to 6 who participated in the Regional Zone Gymnastics Competition; two teams came second overall in their year levels (see below). Students were encouraged to participate in the Auckland Kids Marathon, which requires them to run 40km in their own time and the final 2.195km in November when the Auckland Marathon takes place. Mrs Watkins invited students to join a Fun Run at Milford Beach next weekend organised jointly by the Ficino Running Club and the Friends of Ficino. Miss Doctor showed a collection of new books for the library which are now on display for students to peruse. We heard Hockey and Netball results from the weekend. And finally we congratulated nearly twenty Year 4 to 8 students who entered a project into the Ficino Science Fair which is being judged today by Mr Ian Milne. Some of the projects are outstanding and obviously the product of real effort over the holidays. Two things stood out particularly about the projects; firstly the really interesting scientific questions children have, resulting from a sense of wonder and awe of the world around them. Mr Milne was explaining to me how the scientific process is a way of expanding and developing the understanding and experience of this wonder. Secondly, how the projects, particularly some of the senior ones, were undertaken in order to solve a real need or help people in need. If our students have good intentions in their hearts and follow this up with good science, they have the opportunity to make a real difference in the world.

Central West Gymnastics Competition

Congratulations  to all the girls that competed in this competition yesterday.  A special acknowledgement goes to the Year 3 and Year 6 teams for coming 2nd overall for their year groups.  Kieria came 2nd individually, Amelia 6th, Holly 7th and Chyna 8th. These were fantastic results as this was the first time the school had competed in a gymnastics competition.
