Message from the Principal – 21 February 2014

Speech has always been an important aspect of the education offered at Ficino School. Our first School Value is Speak the Truth. This sits at number one because speaking the truth leads to freedom; freedom both for the speaker and for the hearers. So what we speak is important but so too is how we speak. If speech is inaudible, unclear or poorly enunciated, communication does not take place very effectively. Over the last few terms we have been very fortunate to have Mrs Dee McOnie offering Speech and Drama lessons after school with the aim of working towards the Trinity College London graded examinations. Four students sat these late last year and three were awarded Merits and one a Distinction. Their certificates were presented by Mrs McOnie in assembly today.

There is the old adage, those who speak, lead; and an important part of any education is to foster and develop the ability to lead, through learning to speak well. The Sanskrit language assists our students to express themselves with a clear and uplifting sound. Speech competitions and dramatic performances help build confidence and presence when speaking. Music aids our ability to listen which is a key aspect to speaking well and meaningfully. And the texts our students are exposed to in English, Scripture, Philosophy, HMC, Drama, Dance and Sanskrit, all aim to provide a strong moral foundation from which to speak. One ancient Eastern text gives the following advice on speech.

Speak the truth
Speak what is pleasant
Do not speak what is true but unpleasant
Do not speak what is pleasant but untrue

Peter Crompton
