- [Cultural Festival](https://ficino.school.nz/ficino-cultural-festival/): Last Sunday, we hosted a festival showcasing the different cultures of our school community. It was a fun afternoon, with Ficino families, friends, staff and even some alumni coming together to sample an array of delicious treats, activities and performances from around the globe. Visitors had the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of things including Scottish country dancing, Chinese woodblock printing, marshal arts and even New Zealand gumboot throwing. Refreshments on offer ranged from bubble tea and dumplings to lassi and scones and it was wonderful to see so many students sharing their cultural traditions with friends.

Each year students participate in a school-wide speech competion, for which they are required to prepare a recitation of the work of great writers, political figures, thinkers and philosophers. They are supported in this by their class teachers as well as Drama specialists Ms Doctor and Mr Hudson. - [Reading Together: Why you should read to your child](https://ficino.school.nz/importance-of-reading-to-your-child-reading/): Reading with your child is one of the most valuable things you can do to support their learning. While children begin to develop independent reading skills during primary school, continuing to read together at home provides important benefits for their language development, confidence and enjoyment of books. Regular shared reading helps children build strong literacy skills while also creating positive family routines and encouraging curiosity about the world. - [Students Experience New Zealand History](https://ficino.school.nz/students-experience-new-zealand-history/): Our Year 4 students visited Howick Historical Village last week to find out more about the life of early European settlers in New Zealand. Wearing their best Victorian-style costumes for the occasion, they tried their hand at churning butter, dug up historical treasures and even tested out the village stocks, which were used as a form of punishment in the 1800s.
- [Ficino School Picnic](https://ficino.school.nz/ficino-school-picnic-2/): Each year, we are very lucky to be able to have the Ficino School picnic in the beautiful grounds of Philosopy House overlooking Wai O Taiki Bay. This year, the weather was perfect for outdoor fun and it was wonderful to see our families relaxing together. The Friends of Ficino parent volunteers did an amazing job of supplying food and refreshments, including delicious dumplings from Sumthin’ Dumplin’ and a visit from Mr Whippy. The water slide was a big hit with the children and guests were even treated to musical performances from some of our talented students.

Each year, students take part in a range of events, including track, high jump, long jump and discus. Despite less than ideal weather, there was plenty of house spirit in evidence as the children cheered on their peers and celebrated each others’ success. We’ll have to wait until the junior athletics day next week for our Year 1 and 2 students, to see which house is this year’s victor.

- [Nature Studies at Muriwai Farm](https://ficino.school.nz/nature-studies-at-muriwai-farm/): The Aulds are one of Ficino’s founding families and Tim and Rosemary continue to be significant supporters of the school. Each year in Term 1, our Year 3 students take a trip to the Auld family’s lifestyle farm near Muriwai to experience rural New Zealand, meet the various animals and even learn about spinning wool. - [Silver for Lucas at International Robot Olympiad](https://ficino.school.nz/silver-for-lucas-at-international-robot-olympiad/): In December, Lucas in Year 6 travelled to the Gold Coast to take part in the 27th International Robot Olympiad. This global STEM event brings together young innovators from around the world to compete in various robotics challenges. This was Lucas’ first experience of taking part in an international competition, as just one of hundreds of students all required to perform under pressure. Nevertheless, it was an opportunity for him to challenge himself, improve his resilience and experience the importance of perseverance and teamwork. This aims to teach children how to be safe on and in the water. The students had a packed day of sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking. - [Year 3 Nativity Play](https://ficino.school.nz/year-3-nativity-play/): On Wednesday, Year 3 students performed the annual Nativity play. Each year, the whole school comes along to watch the performance and it is a wonderful way to remind the children of the origins of Christmas. Our script is based on the St James Bible and tells the story of Mary and Joseph, and the birth of Jesus in a stable in the town of Bethlehem near Jerusalem. A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who came along to help with the production.

- [Christmas Family Fun](https://ficino.school.nz/christmas-family-fun/): On Friday 21st November, we held our annual Christmas Bazaar here at Ficino School. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and it was wonderful to see students and families from both the school and preschool having fun. - [Years 1 & 2 Visit Auckland Zoo](https://ficino.school.nz/years-1-2-visit-auckland-zoo/): On Thursday, our Year 1 and 2 students visited Auckland Zoo for the day to find out more about animal habitats and species categorisation. During their trip they learned about the defining features of mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and reptiles, and had an opportunity to see some real-life examples of these up close. The children, staff and parent helpers braved a heavy downpour to watch a bird flight show and visited the Australian Bush Track where they saw kangaroos and water dragons. - [Studies of Ancient Greece](https://ficino.school.nz/studies-of-ancient-greece/): For the past two terms, our Year 4 students have been studying Ancient Greece. They have produced some wonderful project work and, as part of this topic, they learned about why pottery was made by the people of the period and what it was used for. Employing papier-mâché techniques, they created their own vases and decorated them in the style of the Ancient Greeks with the symbols for gods and goddesses.  
- [Choir Serenades Residents at Eden Care Retirement Village](https://ficino.school.nz/choir-serenades-residents/): Our Senior Choir had the pleasure of performing for the residents of Eden Care Retirement Village. The students presented eight songs they have been learning throughout the year, showcasing an impressive and diverse repertoire for a primary school choir.  In the spirit of the season, they concluded with a light-hearted Halloween piece about trolls, much to the audience’s delight. - [Kiwi Kapers Orchestral Performance](https://ficino.school.nz/kiwi-kapers-orchestral-performance/): Last week our Year 5 and 6 students were thrilled to attend the Kiwi Kapers performance by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at the Aotea Centre. The concert centred on Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, with the National Youth Theatre narrating and acting out the story as each piece was performed. The show included three original songs with a uniquely New Zealand twist, guided by Auckland Philharmonia’s Principal Timpanist, Steven Logan. - [Mathex Cup Victory](https://ficino.school.nz/mathex-cup-victory/): On Wednesday 23rd October, two teams from Ficino School’s Year 5 & 6 classes competed in the annual Mathex Competition to pit their skills against other central schools. Mathex is a challenging and fast-paced mathematics contest in which schools from across Auckland compete against each other in teams to answer questions as quickly as possible. In the Year 5 competition, this year’s questions were challenging, with just 2 out of 27 teams achieving a score of 100. Our Year 5 team can be proud of their score of 90. - [EPro8 Competition](https://ficino.school.nz/epro8-competition/): On Wednesday, our Year 7 and 8 EPro8 teams competed at Remuera Intermediate. Both teams were very competitive, with Year 8 (The Clankers), coming first equal and making it through to the semi-final. Year 7 (Men in Blue), showed excellent ability with the electronics and were at the top of the leaderboard with only 37 minutes to go, but were unable to hold their position to the end.

This helps the children learn how to respond quickly and appropriately to different emergency scenarios. Next week will be the Shake Out drill.  When an earthquake happens we want the children to DROP, COVER, and HOLD. - [Junior Students Experience Yoga](https://ficino.school.nz/juniors-relax-into-yoga-during-pe-session/): Our junior students undertook a relaxing and restorative PE session last week. A hatha yoga practitioner guided them through a series of poses and breathing techniques. Hatha yoga is a branch of yoga that aims to preserve and channel energy. The trip gave students the chance to interact with a variety of farm animals, including feeding lambs, chickens, and turkeys. They checked out pigs, patted cows and lambs and went through a chicken hutch! They also got to churn milk and watch a sheep being shorn. - [Interschool Chess Championship](https://ficino.school.nz/interschool-chess-championship/): I’d like to congratulate our chess team: Ethan, Jayden, Anson, and Arlo, for their excellent performance at the Interschool Chess Championship (Central Auckland), on 5th August at Michaels Avenue Community Centre. Our team faced strong opposition from many schools across the region and displayed great focus, sportsmanship, and determination throughout the day. - [APO’s Rare Musical Treat](https://ficino.school.nz/apo-woodwind-inspires-y4-6-students-at-ficino/): The APO’s (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra) Trio con Brio inspired the children with their beautiful woodwind performance. We have seen a brass quintet and a string ensemble, but woodwind ensembles are very rare, so it was a special treat for the children. Year 4 – 6 heard some music that was familiar to them, like pieces from the Nutcracker ballet and Rhapsody in Blue. The children asked some thoughtful questions at the end. The musicians were impressed by the children’s depth of musical knowledge, ability to focus for an extended period, and the asking of pertinent questions.

- [Y3 celebrates bees!](https://ficino.school.nz/y3-celebrates-crucial-pollinator-role-of-bees/): Year 3’s science topic has taught them all about the tiny insects who do a giant job for our planet! They shared their learnings ahead of World Bee Day so we can see how important these pollinators are. Without bees, many of our favourite flowers, fruits and vegetables wouldn’t exist. Even scarier for some, chocolate wouldn’t exist! These tiny insects are facing some giant problems in the form of pollutants, pesticides and the loss of their homes. So remember – be kind to bees. Help them by planting flowers like lavender, sunflowers and daisies in your garden.

- [Y7 and Y8 Tidy Kiwi's](https://ficino.school.nz/y7-and-y8-tidy-kiwis-clean-mt-eden-maunga/): Our Y7 and Y8 students have spent an afternoon a week for the last 8 weeks completing an Introduction to Leadership course with Youthtown in Mt Eden. Both classes spent their last session cleaning up Mt Eden. Many of them reflected on the positive feelings they got from ensuring their community was cleaner but also sad when they saw the amount of rubbish that had been dumped “It made me feel good because it meant that we gave back to the universe by picking up the litter scattered over it”.

- [Science Comes Alive for Y2](https://ficino.school.nz/science-comes-alive-for-y2/): To enhance their Science programme, Year 2 children visited The Museum of Transport and Technology where they got to see and experience science in action! There were experiments galore for them to try out: from creating trolleys to exploring the science space in Te Puku (our belly). - [Yr 8 Gloves up in Science](https://ficino.school.nz/yr-8-gloves-up-in-science/): Year 8 has been studying the cardiovascular system that pumps blood around our body. Of course, the heart is the main player, and our students were incredibly fortunate to have real lamb hearts available to dissect (for the less squeamish of them!). Suddenly the terms “left and right ventricles”, “aorta” and “vena cava” make sense as students have literally seen (and felt!) them and understand how they work to pump blood around our bodies. Thank you to Mrs Roscoe who ensures our students get this hands-on and inspiring experience at such an early stage in their learning journeys.
