Many of you will have seen the senior production of Twelfth Night or will see it tonight or tomorrow. It is a phenomenal achievement of coordination, direction and sheer delight. The audience is a wonderful mix of ages with the children finding as much enjoyment as their parents. The Year 7 and 8 students seem to be relishing the opportunity to perform and work together as a group. Their speech is clear, their pauses full of subtle meaning and their actions wonderfully expressive. It is pleasing as teachers to see such latent talent being brought out from the students. In this I am reminded of the meaning of education, with comes from the Latin ‘educere’ which means to draw out or bring forth. It is truly amazing to see what is emerging from these young men and women. This play represents a perfect culmination of the values, principles and practices of a Ficino education.
One of the important aspects of our learning programme is that the students use no personal devices in Years One to Four and only measured use thereafter. I would like to draw your attention to a website recently launched by one of our parents, Julie Cullen. It is entitled Sensible Screen Use in Schools and provides important research in the debate around the effects of too much screen time. Here is a link to the site www.sensiblescreenuse.org.
