Ficino School Letter Week 8, Term 3, 2018

It was an absolute delight to have so many Grandparents visit the school yesterday.  Refreshments were served by a generous group of parents and enthusiastic Year 5 students.  The children thoroughly enjoyed showing their grandparents their work, their classrooms and other parts of the school.

There is something about the quality of listening in a group such as grandparents – there is a depth which is tangible and freeing to the speaker.  I personally experienced this when speaking to the gathering about the school and why we take our senior children on the Renaissance Trip and how they are prepared to be able to benefit from such a trip.  The whole-hearted attentiveness to me drew the words from me without any hesitation.

How to listen attentively is actively taught to Ficino children.  They learn that by listening fully without distraction to whomever is speaking, so much more is able to come from the speaker and so much more is gained by the listener.  Such a practice is given particular emphasis in the children’s P4C (Philosophy for Children) lessons where they sit in a Circle of Enquiry and investigate topics such as excellence, courage, trust.  That respectful listening gives the speaker freedom to say what comes to their mind and enables the others to respond in like manner.

During the recital, the depth of listening by grandparents was again evident and experienced by the children too.  I was struck by the stillness, attentiveness and support of the children as they listened to their peers performing solos of music or speech.

As a school family, we are lifted by that special expansiveness of love that grandparents bring en masse on such an occasion.  Thank you.
