This week has been a delightful reminder of the breadth of a Ficino education. Class 3 have just returned from two days camping at the Auld’s farm in Kumeu, the Year 6 – 8 students attended a performance of ‘A Comedy of Errors’ at the Pop up Globe, and yesterday the senior students delivered a wonderful performance of speech and song to the residents of Eden Village retirement home. What runs through all these experiences for the students is the opportunity to experience and appreciate Beauty. As adults its easy to move through our days missing this opportunity that surrounds us wherever we go. In Kumeu the students were immersed in the beauty of nature; Shakespeare’s plays have stood the test of time and still appeal because of the fine quality of the words and the deeper meaning they invoke; and of course service in the local community is beauty in action. This richness was apparent on the School Tour this morning, where we encountered Sanskrit, Science and Shakespeare. Often prospective parents glibly ask if they can attend as well, because something has touched their hearts. David Boddy who was Headmaster of the St James Senior Boys School recently described our world-wide family of schools as ‘Schools of Warm-heartedness’. This was certainly the experience this morning.
