Ficino School Letter Week 6, Term 4, 2017

This week has been filled with wonderful end of term events. On Wednesday, we celebrated Just This Day, a day in the year for people around the world to consciously unite in stillness.  This is the last year the event will take place and it has brought forth many creative ideas in its marking.  The Year 8 maths class created a labyrinth (maze) based on the one on the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France, on the lemon lawn and the children walked it in prayerful silence.  We have made Tibetan Prayer flags, which hung from the ceiling of the covered walkway, blowing their messages of peace into the wind.  Beautiful poems in celebration of silence were written one year, and in this, the final year we gathered all the students and staff from the School and Preschool and joined hands to encircle the villa.  We all just listened as two prayer bells made their way around the circle.  This was filmed by Sam Britten using his state of the art drone, and you can see the resulting film clip via the link below under Just this Day Drone Filming.

Later in the day on Wednesday, the students from Years Three to Eight enjoyed the annual Swimming Gala at Mt Eden pool.  Thank you to the parents who assisted with timing. On Thursday some of our junior students entertained the residents at the Eden Village Rest Home with recitation and Christmas carols, and on Friday morning, the children from Year One to Six showcased some of their dancing.  The development of rhythm and timing was particularly evident in the folk dancing from Year One through to Year Four.  In dancing with a partner it was beautiful to see the care for each other that dancing has the power to bring.
