Ficino School Letter Week 6, Term 3, 2017

This week saw an opportunity for our young musicians to display their talent and perform in front of two judges.  The annual music competition seems a real draw card amongst the students with over 80 entries.  These included pre-grade instrumentalists right up to one working towards Grade 8, and even a group of singers who courageously sang solo in front of their peers which is no mean feat.  Both judges were young music teachers, who really enjoyed the occasion.  They praised the students for their courage, enjoyment and connection with their music and their audience.  Lauren White is hoping to offer singing lessons next term with more information due to be distributed from the music department shortly.  A number of students seemed keen to take up this offer.

Last week, we had eight students competing in the North Island Primary School Skiing Championships (NIPS), where the top team came a credible eighth.  This is the third year that Ficino has achieved a place in the top ten, which is outstanding considering the size of our School and with over 90 schools competing.

It is apt to write about both Music and Sport his week, as according to the ancient Greek Philosopher, Plato, these two activities combined, balance the character of a growing young person.  Sport helps build strength and backbone whilst music brings a gentleness and harmony to the being.
