Ficino School Letter, Week 5, Term 2, 2018

One of our focus areas for developing student learning this year is in encouraging Growth Mindsets.  Some of you will be familiar with Caorl Dweck’s work in this area.  In essence a growth mindset is one in which a child, or in fact anyone, believes that their intelligence is fluid and has the capacity to “develop through their effort, dedication, learning and master-ship from others.”

This is a contrast to a Fixed Mindset which is the idea that our intellectual ability and talent are fixed at a certain level; that “we have a particular amount and that’s that.”  The danger of a fixed mindset is that a student becomes “afraid to try because they are afraid to look dumb”.

The encouragement of a growth mindset is most powerfully developed in children when their teachers and parents use language that praises their effort and not their ability.  Carol Dweck’s work shows that praising children’s brilliance and talents puts them into a fixed mindset whereas praising the process such as effort, persistence or focus develops a growth mindset.

The quotations here are taken from a useful animation on Growth Mindsets by Carol Dweck.  To view it click here.
