Here is a story from Anthony de Mello’s book, One Minute Wisdom which we read as a staff this morning.
The disciples were absorbed in a discussion of Lao-tzu’s dictum:
“Those who know do not say;
Those who say do not know.”
When the master entered, they asked him exactly what the words meant.
Said the Master, “Which of you know the fragrance of a rose?”
All of them knew. Then he said, “Put it into words.”
All of them were silent.
This reminds me of how young children view the world. They see and experience much more than they can express and even as they progress through their primary education, they often can’t find the words to explain what they clearly understand. In fact a big part of education is learning the ability to give expression to our understanding. This is how we consolidate our learning. People often find out how much they know about a subject when they have to teach it to someone else. But there are things that are inexpressible that the Master refers to here, and it is a healthy practice to be able to enjoy beautiful things without needing words to describe them. This connects us with our own inner stillness, and if children can keep that connection, which is naturally there when they are very young, alive through their word-based education, it is a treasure they take with them into adulthood.
