Ficino School Letter Week 4, Term 1, 2017

Some people see WORK as a dirty four letter word, but a very different view of it was offered in the Assembly this morning.  The middle eastern poet, Kahill Gibran describes Work as ‘love made visible’.  In this way work can, and should be, a source of happiness, satisfaction and contentment.  To enable this shift, four simple principles of work have been developed by the School of Philosophy, and were presented to the children. These were presented and demonstrated using the activity of sweeping a floor, which the children get the opportunity to experience when clearing up after lunch. The four principles are as follows:-

1.  Attend to the working surface.
This is the precise place where the action is taking place; so in sweeping, it is where the bristles of the broom meet the floor.

2.  Trust the instrument to do the job.
A fascinating discussion arose from this about having the right equipment for the job you are doing.  In terms of cleaning – a broom might not be the best instrument for removing butter for example.

3.  The work is more important than any ideas we have about it.
How often do we expend precious energy thinking about whether we want to do a job or not, rather than just getting on with it.

4.  Work until it is time to stop.
Sometimes we stop a job early and other times we work beyond the appropriate finishing time, and we all know the inefficiencies that result from this.

The children were very engaged and seemed to recognise the benefits of these simple principles. Some of the most apposite contributions came from Year 1 and 2.
