Ficino School Letter, Week 2, Term 1, 2019

Today we come to the conclusion of our first full week for 2019. We have more new students in the school this year than ever before in my tenure as Principal.  They will have been finding their feet and adjusting to the new environment of Ficino School.  From what I have seen they have been welcomed by the students in their classes and the school as a whole.  This openness and attentiveness to those around us is a key aspect of Ficino School.  In fact attention and awareness are vital to living a successful and fulfilling life.

This morning we awarded badges to our Year 8 students, giving each of them a role to play in serving the school.  These range from Sports Captains to Science Monitors including Head Librarians, House Captains and IT and Art Monitors.  Our fourth School Value is Learn to be responsible and be responsible to learn.  These roles are a wonderful opportunity for our senior students to step up to the plate and take responsibility.  It is an interesting word ‘responsibility’; in its essence it simply means the ability to respond; and there we are back to attention and awareness because we can’t respond to anything if we are not awake to the needs of those around us.

The Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, once said “Life is short.  Do not forget about the most important things in our life, living for other people and doing good for them.”
