Ficino School Letter, Week 1, Term 2 2018

Welcome back to the new term and thank you for your patience regarding the timing of the holidays.  For the rest of this year and next year, they will align with the state school breaks.  Several of our teachers attended a School of Philosophy study programme last week, which lifted the level of engagement with the essential ethos of Ficino School.  At the heart of the education here is that point of interaction between teacher and child; that is where the real learning takes place. As teachers, if we can draw out of the students that innate ability to focus their attention through the practice of it ourselves in their presence, we will be performing a great service.  Almost any teacher you ask, who has been in the profession for any length of time, will likely have observed that the ability to simply focus one’s attention and concentrate is diminishing as the years go by.  Eckhart Tolle who wrote the popular book ‘The Power of Now’ described attention as ‘primordial intelligence’.  I think he meant that through attention we tap into reserves of understanding that are otherwise inaccessible.

In Assembly this morning, we looked up the word ‘Pourna’ which is a Sanskrit word that recurs again and again in the prayer for this term.  It means complete, whole, entire, contented, perfect.  The prayer we recite translates as:

That is Perfect, this is Perfect, Perfect comes from Perfect, take Perfect from Perfect and the remainder is Perfect.  May peace and peace and place be everywhere.

By giving full attention a child has the opportunity to experience completeness and perfection that is their birthright.

Tiri Tiri Matangi – Yrs 3, 4, 7 & 8
The new trip to Tiri Tiri Matangi is happening on Wednesday 16 May.  You were sent an online permission form and gear list at the beginning of this week.
Completed forms are required to be returned by Friday 11 May (today!).
It is important to return this form even if your child will not be attending – especially to record the reason why not.

Stardome Observatory Trip
In Year 3 Nature Study, we have been studying the cycle of day and night along with the seasons and in Year 4, Space including the planets, the Moon and the constellations. The proposed visit to the Stardome is to accompany the students’ learning in these exciting topics.

Parents of Year 3 & 4 children were recently sent an online permission form for their child to attend this trip on Wednesday 23 May.  Each child must have a completed online form to be able to attend.

Completed forms are required to be returned by Wednesday 16 May.

It is important to return this form even if your child will not be attending – especially to record the reason why not.

Trial French Lesson
A trial French lesson will be available for interested students next Wednesday 16 May from 3.15 – 4.15pm.
There are currently 2 spaces available – if you are interested in enrolling your child, please email Maroussia to book a place.

Ficino School Sports Jackets
Another order for the Ficino School sports jacket is being placed at the end of Week 2 in Term 2.  The royal blue and gold jackets which are wind and shower proof will have Ficino School printed on the front and back. A variety of sizes will be available in the office for your child to try on at the beginning of Term 2.

They can be used for PE, but not as an alternative to the polar fleece.  It would be good if all children in Ficino Sports teams purchased one, to give a unified look.  The jackets will cost $70 each and orders must be placed and paid for before Friday 18th May.

Year 7 & 8 students will need one of these jackets for the Renaissance Trip.

This is the only order we will place this year, and the jackets will not be available from the uniform shop.

Ficino After School Care (FASC)
Please remember that all bookings for FASC need to be made through the school office either by email or by phone 6233385. If your child is booked in and no longer coming to after school care, please ring the office and cancel the booking.
