This week Year 5 to 8 children visited Eden Rest Home and Village for the first of our four recitals to the residents there. Our recital included singing items, piano and flute solos, the string and recorder ensembles together with recitation pieces and two short excerpts from the senior production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Our recital lasted 45 minutes and was warmly received and praised by the 40 or so residents who were our audience.
Ficino School has formed a choir for the first time in many years and this choir is entered to compete in August in the 2019 Kids Sing Auckland Regional Festival which is run by the New Zealand Choral Federation. We will be competing on the Town Hall stage against other Auckland Primary and Intermediate schools such as Diocescan, Kings and St Cuthberts who often enter quite large choirs.
The Ficino Choir consists of 16 children from Years 5 to 7 and they are conducted by our singing teacher, Mrs Lauren White. At Eden Village they performed the compulsory piece for the Kids Sing Festival called ‘The Wind’ composed by Auckland composer David Hamilton.
Plato has said that “Rhythm and harmony penetrate deeply into the mind and take a most powerful hold on it, and if education is good, bring and impart grace and beauty.”
Our choir’s first public performance went very well, the children bright and steady in their attention, certainly graceful and beautiful to hear and to watch. They have two more pieces to perfect before August.
