Ficino School Letter, Week 1, Term 1, 2019

A word from the Principal

It is always wonderful to see the school full of children again after our staff preparation days.  They bring it all to life, and meeting them in their simplicity and open-mindedness is refreshing.

Our School Assembly this morning was about ‘Treasures’.  There is a concept in the Maori tradition of Taonga which is often translated as treasure.  A treasure in this sense is something worthwhile, something that you keep close and look after.  Taonga is something that provides protection and stays with us.  Having shown the students some greenstone or pounamu, which is considered a treasure by Maori. we looked at what treasures the students will learn at school.  One of the greatest treasures we offer are our School Values, which provide great protection and certainty.  For those new to the School our five values are:

Speak the truth
Obey lawful direction
Respect all
Learn to be responsible and be responsible to learn
Practise what is good with resilience and courage

The first is the most important and there is a simple principle that I explained to the children.  If we speak the truth we grow strong, if we speak untruths we grow weak.  The students will look at these values in more detail as the term progresses.  The new students will receive a Values Card with the five School Values on it – a small treasure in itself.

By now you should have received a letter from your child’s class teacher outlining some of the events of the term ahead; I look forward to seeing you all at the parents’ evening.

Peter Crompton
Principal
