Ficino School Letter, Week 6, Term 4, 2018

This morning’s assembly was a wonderful celebration of Dance and Sanskrit. Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 performed dances from a variety of traditions, including a Maori Stick Dance, traditional Indian dance and a Czech Folk Dance.  The joy and variety of energies displayed by the dancers was evident for all to see.  The Year 5 and 6 girls Gita dance was full of beauty and devotion.

We were honoured this morning to have Dr Gajendra Panda and his wife attending our assembly.  Dr Panda is a professor of Sanskrit from Gujarat University in India.  He specialises in texts from the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads, which are familiar to our students.  He was delighted that he had found a school in New Zealand that studies Sanskrit. He was particularly moved that our Assembly began with the Sanskrit dedication Om Paramatmanenama which translates as ‘A bow to the Supreme Lord’.  Dr Panda said it is rare to find any schools in India which begin their day with this universal dedication.  This dedication has been at the heart of the school since its foundation and is one of the corner stones of our practice.  It is about the ego bowing down to allow the greater spirit that lies within us all to show itself.  When our students connect with this idea, they can’t help but shine.
