Ficino School Letter, Week 4, Term 4, 2018

In a recent interview, I was asked about the benefits of Mindfulness.  What I notice about the students at Ficino is that they tend to excel in high pressure situations.  We have individuals who excel to high levels in their chosen fields – more than you would expect from such a small school.  Similarly we have school teams that punch above their weight in competitions.  Our EPRO8 technology teams competed last night in the Auckland heats.  The two teams of Year 7 and 8 students came first and second out of 12 teams altogether, putting them through to the semi-finals next week.  Technology is hardly a mainstream subject at Ficino, but the students worked hard in preparation and formed two cohesive units on the night.  One participant reported to her parents that what she enjoyed most about the evening was how well her team worked together.  It is this ability to cooperate and collaborate that brings success.  Some commentators believe that the move to more online learning in schools improves collaboration, however I think there are real questions about this idea.  Our students have excellent collaboration skills from working with each other face to face.  This sort of collaboration involves the whole being which I am not sure is achieved in the virtual world.
