A word from the Principal
This week our Year One to Four students made their termly trip to the local Eden Village Rest Home where they delighted the residents with their singing, speech and piano playing. Having the pleasure of being able to accompany them this week, it was great to see their natural confidence and ease in performing to the audience there. They gave fully of themselves to the spirit of the occasion; singly heartily and beautifully. Performing service of this kind is such a crucial part of a child’s upbringing and something we encourage at Ficino. One High Court Judge in a request for lawyers to do more service in their communities said “Service is the rent you pay for your room on this planet.”
One great way for young people to serve is through their speech. When they do this well, it uplifts others in a special way. Our Head Boy Nicholas Clarke has been selected to speak at the ISNZ Conference later this month. He will be addressing a large room of Principals, Bursars and Board Members from Independent Schools nationwide about leadership from a students’ perspective. He read his speech to the Assembly this morning and it was outstanding. He described three key aspects of leadership as being calmness, fairness and kindness, and gave clear descriptions of why these are important and how they manifest themselves at Ficino.
