On Wednesday this week, half of the School participated in our triennial visit to Tiritiri Matangi bird sanctuary. This is always a special trip and this year was no exception. Because of the later than expected timing, the birds were out in abundance and some of the rarer species more easily seen. The guides, many of whom traveled across to the island on the same ferry as the Ficino group, commented to a number of the teachers how attentive and engaged the children were, as well as how prepared they were. This enabled the guides to offer a deeper experience than they usually can. They also commented on the students’ excellent behaviour and what a pleasure it was to have them on the island. Such comments are very pleasing to hear and ultimately are a result of our students ability to direct their attention to where it needs to be and enjoy the fullness of the present moment.
This fine attention was further demonstrated in the beautiful Dance Assembly that took place this morning. The Year One and Three students chanted beautiful prayers about peace and perfection with their associated movements, and the Year Seven and Eight girls crowned off the morning with an exquisite dance to an enchanting piece of music. The fine use of attention entranced the students and brought the whole assembly to a state of rest. Certain dances seem to have this unique ability to bring a sense of completeness to the performers and the audience.
