Ficino School Letter Week 4, Term 4, 2017

In Assembly this morning a couple of mathematical puzzles were presented to the children, and awards were given out for outstanding performers in the Australian Mathematics Competition.  The competition is sat by all students from Year 4 upwards at Ficino which is a different approach than most other schools who only enter their top performers.  This year, there have been improvements right across the board.  Many students have increased their levels since last year with a significant number registering big increases in their scores.  Five students achieved High Distinctions, which means they are placed in the top 2% of the country; this is up from one student last year.  A further fourteen students received distinctions which puts them in the top 15% in the country.  Congratulations to those students (and parents and teachers) who put in a considerable amount of practice to achieve so highly.  The Cambridge Mathematics curriculum seems to be providing an excellent foundation for mathematical thinking which will stand all our students in good stead.

Our junior students visited the Edenvale Rest Home to sing and perform for the residents. One 90 year old was feeling too tired to come but was convinced by some of her friends to attend.  After the concert, she couldn’t hold back her delight and spoke of how overjoyed she was to have made the effort to come and how much it had lifted her spirits.  There is such generosity when children give their speech and song to others in such an open way that all around take heart, including the performers themselves.  This is why we continue to offer as many performance opportunities as we can for the students.  The next opportunity is our Dance Assembly in two weeks’ time.
