Ficino School Letter Week 9, Term 3, 2017

As another wonderful school term draws to a close and we set our sights on the upcoming holiday, it is worth considering what the word holiday means and what they are for.  The vacation is obviously a time to rest and recuperate.  All the activities of the school term are a bit like a great drama – like the Shakespeare Play our senior students have just performed.  In any drama, the actors cannot be on the stage all the time, otherwise their costumes would get worn out and their performance would deteriorate.  They need to go back stage where their makeup and garments are refreshed.   The holidays are a bit like this.

The word holiday actually comes from the Old English ‘Halig Daeg’ which means ‘Holy Day’ and the word Holy means ‘to make whole’.  So this time of rest and refreshment is important to restore our sense of completeness, our integrity.  I wish all our School community a restful break with time to appreciate the beauty our surroundings offer us; this is expressed admirably in William Henry Davies poem Leisure.

Leisure
What is this life if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
