Term 3 has certainly started with plenty of energy. Energy, as it happens was one of the key messages in Ian Milne’s Science Show on Thursday morning. He had children playing with fidget spinners (currently not allowed at School, but encouraged for exploration at home), putting marbles on their cheeks, blowing up balloons and releasing them and firing compressed air rockets down the length of the hall. The session finished with Mr Milne bringing the room to rest by asking us all to listen to very quiet music coming from a small wind up toy. He then placed it on a table and the volume increased ten fold. What questions might the children ask about that? Mr Milne’s enthusiasm is contagious, backed up by his experience as a teacher and his life interest in exploring the spiritual dimension of science education. He recently sent me a paper he has written and the opening sentence is –
“Some times in our working lives elements of our beliefs and behaviours combine together and reward us with an aesthetic experience that reminds us of the richness of human kind as we interact with the wonder and beauty of the natural phenomena that surrounds us on this planet.”
Ian confided in me afterwards that about ten years ago, when Mrs Milne started teaching at Ficino, the philosophy of the School and particularly our approach to Science as Nature Study, explored through the five senses, and their link with the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space, resonated strongly with the direction he was taking. It is always a delight to have Ian sharing his joy and child-like awe with us all.
