Ficino School Letter Week 1, Term 3, 2017

Our first week back at school has been filled with delightful learning opportunities for the children. Students from Year 4 to 8 sat the challenging Australian Maths Competition on Thursday morning; the results of this come out near the end of the term. Also on Thursday, 24 students from Years 5 – 8 who have worked hard over the holiday brought in their amazing Science Projects. The best ones from Year 7 and 8 will be submitted to the regional NIWA Science Fair. Primary Science Educator, Ian Milne, who is judging the competition had this to say after meeting students this morning.

“The projects submitted by Ficino students for their Science Fair were all outstanding. The students were wide-eyed with enthusiasm and delight when explaining their projects to me”.

At our Monday assembly we set the theme for Philosophy for this term as Compassion. We began with a quote from the Dalai Lama –

“If you want others to be happy, practise compassion, If you want to be happy, practise compassion.”

Compassion is a natural, universal emotion which benefits both the giver and the receiver. Albert Einstein spoke about the need to ‘widen our circle of compassion’. How far can it go, I wonder?
