This is the last newsletter of the term and the end of a great week for New Zealand sport. At Assembly on Monday morning, I reiterated the message of Sir Ray Avery’s about the special quality New Zealander’s have of ingenuity, and a desire to improve on the status quo. Our America’s Cup challenge and success was a perfect example of this from beginning to end. It was a triumph of determination, creative thinking and resilience – all qualities exemplary for our students. Furthermore, the changing fates of our campaign indicated an ability of the Team New Zealand crew to meet each day with whatever it brings and keep their minds and hearts on the bigger picture.
In our Friday morning Assembly, we heard the Zen story about the farmer and his horse, which exactly mirrors this ability to not be pulled around by the sways of chance which is the result of an over active ‘monkey mind’! When the activity in this realm lessens the heart opens.
Odysseus’ journey from Troy back to his homeland in Ithica is another enduring story of triumph over the vicissitudes of fate. Class 4 under the direction of Mrs Roscoe have been working hard all year to bring this story to the stage and will give two performances today. I am sure they will continue the outstanding tradition of drama at the School.
