Ficino School Letter Week 6, Term 2, 2017

This week we are celebrating our 20th birthday.  Ficino School officially began on this site in 1997 under the direction of the founding headmaster, Mark Broadwith.  The School occupied the villa initially and then grew progressively down the south corridor, until eventually the hall was completed in 2002.

Prior to the purchase of 27 Esplanade Road, there was a pre-foundation year with six children in a house in Grafton Road. Mark Broadwith sent a message to the first teacher, Mrs Carolyn Hanna and Headmaster Mr Harry van der Vossen, which contained the following maxim from Marsilio Ficino, the fifteenth Century Philosopher from whom the School takes its name.

‘All things are directed from goodness to goodness,
Rejoice in the Present
Set no value on property
Seek no honours
Avoid excess
Avoid activity
Rejoice in the Present’

In assembly this morning we talked about what Ficino School was like in the early days and outlined some future projects, and the thing that runs through it all is the present moment.  Our school motto ‘Rejoice in the Present’ is a good reminder just to be here, now.

The future projects under consideration are mostly development of play spaces for the children, including a new long jump/sand pit and a proposed multi-sport astro-turf surface to replace the lawn behind the villa. Funds raised from the Friends of Ficino are earmarked for these, but we are seeking a donor to make up the shortfall. If you know of anyone who might be interested in sponsoring such a development, I would be delighted to hear from you.

The children will enjoy a beautiful cake made by parent Tanya Hyams-Young at lunch time today, and celebrate 20 years of Ficino School.
