Good Works Assemblies are always an excellent opportunity to showcase the students’ work, and this morning was no exception. Some of the artwork being produced and displayed around the School is outstanding and two classes spoke about these at the assembly. Class Four prepared a quiz, where they described the features of gods and mythical creatures from ancient Greece for the audience to guess who they were. Almost all were answered correctly first time and in some cases almost every student in the senior half of the School had their hand up. This exposure to the classical traditions gives the students a connection with those influences which underline western civilisation. The morning finished with presentations from Year 8 students on the Sputnik 1 satellite launched by the Russians in 1959 which started the Space Race; a speech from Prospero, a taster for this year’s Senior Shakespeare production, The Tempest, which will be performed in September, and an emotive speech written and read by Pearl Tucker on the courage of the ANZACs. Pearl won first prize in a local competition and will read her speech and lay a wreath at the Mt Eden War Memorial on Tuesday 25th April at the ANZAC Service.
