As our second week draws to a close, the School feels full and settled. At Tuesday’s Assembly, we awarded eight School badges to our Year 8 students. The final year at Ficino School is an opportunity to taste leadership, and experience responsibility through service towards some aspect of school life. There are badged roles for Head Boy and Head Girl, four House Captains, a Head Librarian and Sports Captain. Over the next couple of weeks we will offer further opportunities as Science, Art and IT monitors. As the year progresses all final year students have the opportunity to earn a Prefect Badge. This is awarded for endeavour in following the School Values and for competence and effort in fulfilling any service roles.
It is excellent to have a large Year 8 class of fifteen students this year. On Tuesday I took a Philosophy class with the senior boys, in which we looked at a story written by the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, about a conversation Socrates had with a young man called Alcibiades. They were investigating the question of whether we are more than just our body. After reading the story the boys came up with a great set of philosophical questions to investigate, and voted to pursue one in particular. ‘Is what we do, who we are all the time?’ The subsequent discussion was focussed and intriguing; it included such ideas as ‘is a person defined by their actions?’ and ‘is there a part of us that is indefinable?’ Quite profound lines of enquiry, of which they seemed infinitely capable of and interested to investigate.
Parents Evening – Monday 13 Feb – 6pm – 7.30pm
The Parents Evening is on Monday 13th February at 6pm in the school hall. Drinks and finger food will be served from 5.30pm. The main purpose of the evening is to provide an opportunity for you to hear what is in stall for the year ahead with the class teacher. The evening will begin with an address by the Principal. A notice regarding the meeting was sent home last week. We look forward to seeing you on Monday. Some parking will be available in the school, but if you can find a park on the street, that would be helpful.
School Picnic – Sunday 26 Feb – Long Bay – 10 – 2pm
A notice with further details has been sent home with the children today. We look forward to seeing as many families as possible at the picnic.
New Caretaker at School
We farewelled our school caretaker Graham Soughtton at the end of last year so that he can pursue a new business venture. Our new caretaker, Terrence Cox has begun this year with enthusiasm. Terrence has worked as a caretaker at number of schools and will be here between the hours of 7.30am and 4pm.
Containers Needed for the Art Room
We need clean clear containers for the art room to use for paints etc., so if you have any 500g hummus or dip containers (no lids needed), please drop them at the office. Thank you for your help.
