Ficino School Letter Week 7, Term 4, 2016

The Christmas season is almost upon us and as the school year draws to a close, with exams completed, the chidren have had opportunities this week to pursue some quiet activities. On Wednesday, we partook in a movement called Just this Day. This was started in England by a parent of six children who all attended our sister school, St James in London. Her idea was that on one day of the year, peoples around the world should be united in stillness, by taking time on that day just to be silent for a while. A number of classes tried this while undertaking some quiet activity such as geometry or writing poetry. One class wrote poems abour life, love, dreams, the present moment abd nature in complete silence. Here are some lines taken from different poems all written about Life. These students are eight and nine years old.

Life is a wonder, explore it
Life is music, listen to it
Life is dangerous, face it
Life is a challenge, answer it
Life is a seed, plant it
Life is beauty, admire it
Life is a song, praise it
Life is a promise, keep it
Life isn’t an end, realise it

I had the privilege of joining the Ficino Running Club this morning to raise money for the Red Cross aiding the earthquake relief work in Kaikoura. Thank you to all those who came to the special breakfast and who donated funds. Altogether we raised $400.
