As the School term nears its end, in contrast the Ficino Preschool is preparing to begin. This morning was a very special occasion for about ten families, a good number of staff members and the Chairman of our Board, Lawrence Ames. We welcomed two esteemed elders from Orakei Marae onto the Ficino School site and they, in turn, welcomed us all into the new Preschool. Also we were very privileged to have Mr Katene Paenga, who is head of The University of Auckland Marae. The occasion took place at dawn, and Mr Paenga described to one of our teachers how he immediately felt he was in a special place when he entered the grounds of the School. Many of us lose touch with being able to feel the quality of a place, but the education of the spirit takes place in a school like Ficino and the work of the School of Philosophy do infuse a special quality to the premises.
Mr Bob Hawke and Ms Sarah Grey called us into the Preschool site with great dignity and open-heartedness. Mr Hawke spoke about his strong Christian faith and his firm conviction that we are all one people born in the image of our Creator. After the speeches, all the children and adults shared a hongi with our guests. At the end of the morning after the sharing of food together, Mr Paenga was moved to speak about what he described as the greatest subject of all, love.
The whole occasion was enriching for us all and we hope it will be the beginning of a rewarding association with both maraes.
