This week has been full of many and varied activities. We had an impromptu visit from the Italian Ambassador, Eccellenza Carmelo Barbarello, who came on Monday afternoon to wish our Year 7 and 8 students “Buon viaggio!”. They depart for the biennial Renaissance Trip in just four weeks’ time. They will visit many great and ancient sites in both the UK and Italy and include in their tour, a performance of The Merchant of Venice at the Globe Theatre. In Italy, they visit Florence, Siena, Orvieto and Rome. The ambassador greeted each student individually giving them a chance to practise their Italian. The students this year have been very fortunate to have parent and university lecturer, Gabriella Brussino teaching them Italian after school in the final weeks this term.
Other activities this week have included a trip to the zoo for New Entrants, Year 1 and Year 2, and the Year 5 and 6 Mathex Competition, where teams of our top mathematicians pit their skills against other schools. One of our Year 6 teams came third overall, scoring 85 out of a possible 100 points. Finally, today in assembly we had our first Spelling Bee in which top students from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed against each other in a sudden death knock out tournament. The grand finale was a competition between top Year 7 & 8 spellers and a team of teachers. It was a close run with the scores level on ten all with two decider questions needed at the end.
