Ficino School Letter Week 2, Term 3, 2016

Grandparents morning is always a popular event throughout the whole School community and yesterday was no exception. One grandparent of five Ficino students, who has been attending the event every year for the last twelve years, said afterwards that he would love to be invited to return next year even after his last grandchild has graduated. This is the power of fine music and fine speech; it uplifts the spirit of all.

The reason Grandparents Morning is so special is because the relationship between grandparent and grandchild is a special one. It is imbued with love, trust and respect, and is patient. When these qualities are present in the School in such measure, everyone partakes of the substance of them. The children performed beautifully with real connection with the words, music and movements. Even the opening words from Shakespeare’s Richard III ‘Now is the winter of our discontent’ are uplifting when spoken with such explicit understanding. We also enjoyed an exquisite performance of Chopin and a Gaelic prayer.

Over seventy guests attended the morning, and please pass on our thanks to all those who supported the School through purchase of new books for the library, sponsorship of the Renaissance Trip and donations for the Marsilio Ficino book, and simply for their presence.

Ficino School Library

We have been very fortunate in having parent Andrew McKay volunteering his help in the library since the start of the year.  He has done a thorough analysis of our stock, weeding out old and rarely used books, and preparing a list of titles to enhance our collection. Over thirty of the seventy titles needed were purchased on Grandparents Morning, to the value of over $700. The Friends of Ficino will be organising further events associated with fundraising for the library.

Year 4 Play – Thursday 18/8 – 11am

Class Four is presenting the story of Demeter and Persephone for parents and friends on Thursday 18th August at 11 am. Based on an Ancient Greek myth, we follow the story of the abduction of Demeter’s daughter, Persephone, by the God of the Underworld, Hades, and the great lengths Demeter goes to get her back. Everyone welcome.
