Ficino School Letter Week 6, Term 2, 2016

This week the students had the opportunity to play music to each other at our annual class concerts. This event has morphed from children playing in front of their own class to an opportunity to play to the whole junior and senior syndicates respectively. It is a wonderful time for spontaneous sharing of music, with several students who weren’t going to play being moved to contribute in the moment. Teachers and students sang along while individuals played their instruments. What was most precious was the level of listening and respectful support given to the participants, irrespective of their level of ability.

Today we had a visit from new Advisory Board member Lorraine Warshaw and her colleague and friend Jon Winder. They spent an hour and a half at the school and were really moved by the exceptional quality of the teaching and the spirited engagement of the students. Jon Winder has co-founded a number of charitable organisations aimed at helping boys to reach their full potential. He is a business coach and consultant to the NZ Ministry of Education, several NZ and Australian Universities and the NZ Council for Educational Research. It was a pleasure to have them both at the school and hear such positive comments. Jon was particularly struck by the ability of the children to formulate questions and express them with confidence.
