This week was made special on Friday morning when a group of ten Peace Runners joined the Ficino School Running Club. The Sri Chinmoy Peace Run is an event that has been held regularly for the last thirty years since its inception in 1987. It has taken place in more than 100 countries. Past supporters of this event are Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev who all held the torch. This week the torch has traveled around Auckland schools including Ficino School this morning.
Around 25 students, 15 parents and teachers and 10 members of the Sri Chinmoy organisation followed the flaming torch up to the top of Mt Eden and back again at 7am this morning. Students were able to hold the torch on the top in the light rain of the early morning. The Peace Run aims to promote understanding, harmony and unity between all peoples and cultures of the world. It was a great privilege to be able to participate in the Peace Run and the organisers spoke eloquently about their purpose over breakfast which we hosted for our guests. They particularly enjoyed joining the school for the Pause and dedication, when the whole room fell very still and quiet. Mrs Watkins was aptly awarded a medal from the organisation for her work towards ‘significantly inspiring and uplifting the standard of society.’
It was good to see so many students and parents joining the run which had a very special quality of joy and unity. Our guests loved what they saw of Ficino School and its ideals and some said they would come and run with us again. We were provided with a beautiful painting by Sri Chinmoy with the title ‘Peace blossoms in the heart of goodness’.
Traffic Safety in the School Grounds
It has been noticed that some cars have been speeding through the school grounds, particularly at morning drop-off. The safety for children and adults is of paramount importance and we ask you to please adhere to the 5 kph speed limit at all times. Mr Soughtton will be on duty again in the mornings next week to help to remind parents to slow down. Thank you for your cooperation.
Teacher Only Day – Friday 3 June
