Ficino School Letter Week 1, Term 2, 2016

We have had a really excellent and eventful first week back at school. Our week started with an Assembly on the subject of Beauty, which is to be our theme for Philosophy lessons this term. The Assembly dealt with Beauty that can be appreciated through he senses such as beautiful sights, sounds and smells. But Beauty can be much more subtle such as beautiful thoughts, feelings or actions. And then there is the experience of Beauty itself. Class Six took this up in their Philosophy lesson this week and used as a stimulus, the following quotation from Confucius “Everything has Beauty but not everyone sees it”. They wanted to explore the question of what is meant by ‘Beauty’? and came up with some amazing statements – such as Beauty is: ‘what it does’ ‘what an object is made of’, ‘how you look at something’, ‘what comes from the hearts of people’ and finally ‘Beauty is how nice you are on the inside’. These are all quoted directly from the children.

This morning we had a beautiful ANZAC Assembly with recitations of poems by Class One and Class Five, and a speech about the different ways courage is experienced in times of war, written and read by Head Boy Thomas Tebbutt.

Hockey started this week and we are very fortunate to have ex-Olympic goal keeper, Mrs Helen Clarke, organising the coaching team.

Finally, as mentioned below, all students from Years 4 to 8 will be participating in clubs this term. It was very impressive yesterday to see several of our senior students offering to run clubs for the younger children. Without exception, they all came out to the front of the Assembly and spoke with confidence, clarity and enthusiasm about the clubs they are offering. This sets a fine example to those coming up through the school, to be our future leaders.
