It was very good to see so many of you at our Parents Evening on Monday. In the Principal’s Address, I spoke about the need for a balance between love and discipline in the education of children. Love is naturally there between a parent and child and a teacher and child. Discipline needs to be learned. We looked at the five skills most sought after by employers of university graduates, which all required a sense of self discipline; they included teamwork, problem solving and the ability to follow through on a task. Discipline is really about habits of mind; it is interesting that subjects like Mathematics, History or Science used to be called disciplines because they trained the mind to think in useful ways. The root of the word discipline is ‘to follow’ like a disciple and children between the age of five and ten naturally want to follow. It is therefore important that they are provided with leadership that has the concept of a good, civilised and cultured being into which the child can evolve. Moving around the school this week, the goodness and willingness of the students is very evident; they respond easily to reminders.
