School Newsletter Week 11, Term 2, 2015

Our final week ended beautifully with choral speeches in Assembly on Wednesday, the Speech Competition on Thursday and presentation of certificates on Friday; with the first place getters presenting their speeches to the Assembly. This week has been a celebration of fine speech. All students have learnt something by heart and presented it to others. The words they learnt were rich in meaning. This is important because what goes into the heart at this age builds a child’s capital for life. These are the words they can return to again and again as an adult. It struck me this morning, that speech is about giving; you learn something by heart and then give it to the audience. It takes courage and humility to deliver speeches in the way the children have this week. And these two great qualities strengthen the character of a young person. A fine way to finish the term.

Some of our students will be presenting music, drama and speech at the New Zealand Association of Gifted Children’s 40th Anniversary event at Waikato University this weekend. Mr Hudson and myself will also be giving talks on Fossils, teaching Shakespeare and Mindfulness. The School has a stand at the conference which will be manned by staff members over the weekend. If any of you are able to attend we look forward to seeing you there.

Finally, an eleven week term is a lengthy one and the students have done well to last to the end. I wish you all a restful break and look forward to seeing you next term.
