School Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, 2015

There was an interesting article in the newspaper last Sunday which offered suggestions on how to make the school year ahead a fruitful one.  Right up front at number one on the list was the suggestion not to worry about homework at primary level quoting research that suggests it has little impact on student achievement.

As you know, we set regular homework each evening and stand by our reasons for doing it, which are threefold.  Firstly, homework gives the student the opportunity to work independently and use, develop and begin to trust their own inner resource of memory and intelligence. Secondly homework provides an opportunity for parents to be involved in their child’s learning; to see what they are doing at school and to follow their progress.  Finally, homework is a simple discipline, and if it gets established at primary level, the child has a strong foundation to support them later in life.  Homework does need to be relevant, achievable and not overly onerous to achieve these objectives.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Parents Meeting on Monday evening.

Speech & Drama Lessons Cancelled for Term One

The after school speech and drama lessons have been cancelled for this term as Mrs McOnie is still unwell.  Mrs McOnie’s students achieved a high standard in their Trinity exams and we will give out their certificates as soon as possible.  Could parents please bring these to school when you receive them, so that we can present them at an assembly.  Thank you.

Hockey & Netball Participation

Thank you to those who have brought in your yellow forms to let me know what sports your child is interested in playing. Unfortunately, I am still missing approximately half of the forms so please bring them in on Monday or email me to say whether or not your child intends to play netball or hockey with the school.  A copy of the form is attached.

It is quite crucial to bring in the forms as club registrations are opening up.  Thank you.
