Wisdom of a six year old, reported by the School Caretaker

I walked through the junior playground at morning break, and noticed a good amount of the safety bark from the playground area strewn across the path. I set to cleaning it up, when a young girl about six came striding over and started helping. “Did you do this?” I enquired (meaning nothing in particular with the question). “Oh no” she replied emphatically “but I know who did”, and after a short pause added … “Some people just don’t know what they’re doing.” My ears pricked up and I asked “And why don’t they know what they’re doing? “With a grave tone she said “Because they’re dreaming, that’s why. They’re not awake”. “Are YOU awake” I asked. “Oh yes !” came the answer. “And is it good to be awake?” She looked me straight in the eye and said ” It is VERY good”. And she danced away.

This is a good opportunity to remind you of the invitation to attend Dr Craig Hassed’s lecture on Mindfulness tonight or his workshop tomorrow afternoon. See previously sent flyers.

MERC 2014

Our Year 5 and 6 students have just enjoyed another brilliant two days at the Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC) at Long Bay. There are some brilliant photos up on the notice board outside Year 5’s classroom, which give a real flavour of the days. Activities like these which take most students outside their comfort zone, are wonderful opportunities for teachers to see new and interesting insights into the children in their care. There are some startling quotes from the children also up on the wall. Please take the opportunity to look if you can. The instructors at MERC commented on two things they noted; how well behaved the children were, and on the camaraderie between the students, amongst the staff and between our teachers and the students. Comments like this are not uncommon when our students are out in public, and it is a reminder to us all of the underlying philosophy on which the school was founded and which it continues to foster; that we look to and trust in the essential goodness in each other and by doing so are reminded of the same within themselves.
